The central claim of this paper was that the inherent ambiguity of the symbolic use of proximal deixis makes a significant contribution to the blurred distinction between the external reality and the internal fiction that is so characteristic of Plautine Prostitutes Mont-Saint-Aignan, and especially of its prologues. These various interpretations were not mutually exclusive, and they were argued to encourage the audience to contemplate the nature of dramatic performances.
